DIY: Bleaching my Boring “Workout” Outfit

Once the weather started to get cool (so, like October), I decided to buy something I could workout in that had long sleeves and long pants, in case I wanted to walk outside. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money on workout clothes, so I bought some basic Hanes pants and a matching shirt from the men’s department from Target.

And then I promptly just wore them every day because I was working from home and doing school from home and we were still trying to social distance so I was busy and barely leaving the house.

(I’m going to assume you’re not judging me and that you have a similar outfit you spent much of 2020 in.)

And now I’m sick of it. And I got some oil spots on the shirt from accidentally dripping salad dressing on it and being too lazy to treat it in time.

Again, I’m going to assume you’re not judging me.

Instead of donating the set to a thrift store or throwing it in the garbage because throwing clothes in the garbage is BAD or cutting it up for rags or whatever, I decided to find a cheap way to just zuzsh it up a little, making it a little more exciting, and keep it as a workout / “workout” outfit. Because it’s still good as a workout / “workout” outfit! There’s nothing wrong with it except I’m bored of it.

So, I acid washed it!

I mixed 1 part bleach to 2 parts water in a spray bottle:

And then I laid the set outside on my balcony.

I’m lucky because my balcony has a concrete floor and the railing is kind of old and so if I get bleach on either of those things, it’s not the end of the world. (Like, see that circle? I did that and don’t know what I did… and who cares? Not me!)

SO FYI: if you’re going to do this, DO NOT do it on anything that can be damaged by bleach — no rugs, no carpet, no fancy tiles (to play it safe). Do it outside or do it on the laundry room floor or something. The bathtub even! Just be careful!

Anyway.

I set the spray bottle to the mist setting and just started spraying. I went with the mist setting because I wanted to see what it would look like. I’ve done other methods like splashing or dripping and I’m not totally sold on those methods. I wanted to do the mist and I also knew I would get a few small drips because spray bottles always drip, which I was fine with.

I was NOT expecting the bleached parts to turn PINK! I’m so excited about it!

The few times I’ve bleached clothes before, I keep expecting the bleached parts to be white, but that’s not happening. Which is fine! But it’s always a gamble when you bleach clothes because you don’t know what color is going to appear. Case in point: my black sweatpants I was so excited about:

It’s not the worst thing ever, but… it’s kind of drab. (I wear them anyway, though. They’re still very cozy.)

So, I was very happy to see PINK!!

Can you spot the oil stains? No? Me neither!

I can’t wait to wear them when I’m laying around the house some more— I mean, working out! ;)
